Your personal work and expectations for the future

The Human Development Centre in Islamabad in Pakistan was started by the late Mahbub Ul Haq, perhaps the foremost development thinker of our time. Richard Ponzio started work under Ul Haq's guidance in 1997, and remained at the Centre after Ul Haq passed away suddenly in the spring of 1998.

Richard is currently engaged in research on strategies to avert an arms race and to fashion alternative governance structures and processes in South Asia. His work involves frequent dialogue with public officials and leaders of civil society from the region. While he has participated in high-level conferences and workshops, he has, in his own words, most "benefited from the more intimate interactions with university students throughout the subcontinent". In hearing the concerns and aspirations of the next generation of leaders, Richard is constantly analyzing the region's future.

In an effort to regularly share views among young activists and professionals from Pakistan and abroad, Richard convened a local network of young people last October 1997 in Islamabad. They call the group Tabdeli meaning change in the local language of Urdu, and they hold discussions twice a month on topics ranging from misperceptions of Islam and violence against women in Pakistan to the war in Afghanistan and the world of Urdu language and literature. The group is now also organizing community projects, such as environmental clean-up days and teacher training as well as an international film series to raise money for local charities.

Your personal definition of Social Entrepreneur

A social entrepreneur is someone who creatively channels his or her energies toward advancing human development in the community. Human development is the process of enlarging people's choices and capabilities in all areas of human endeavor (social, cultural, political, economic, etc.). Human development priorities include primary education, basic health care, potable water, adequate nourishment, family planning and access to credit. A person's community may refer to his or her neighborhood, village, town, province, country, region and/or the entire world.
